“An armed society is a polite society.. and this is the Polite Society Podcast where we support and report on civilian self-defense.”

Rob: Welcome to episode 348 sponsored by the Firearms Policy Coalition recorded on the 13th of September, 2015.  I’m Rob Morse.

John- I’m John Richardson, and on tonight’s show we will talk with Stephanie Spika as she runs for the board of directors of the NRA, and with Psychologist Doctor Bruce Eimer about the perverse appeal of gun control.

Rachel- We also talked with long distance rifle competitor Anette Wachter, the 30-cal gal, about her matches at Camp Perry and the British Columbia Championship.

Gary: I’m Gary Daugherty and don’t forget our regular news and reports of defensive gun use.. so climb aboard

John: strap in

Rachel : and hang on!

Rob: Episode 348 of the Polite Society Podcast starts right now.

Show intro music.

Seg 1- Personal news from each participant (when you are done with your segment please ask the next person what has been up with them)

John- Paul is on the road earning a living today.

Not much from me this week. If my voice sounds weird, it is. I’ve been battling some viral thing that had me coughing and hacking. By Friday, I had lost my voice. I’ve been resting my voice since then so that I could be on the podcast today.

Rachel- went out to Davilla and shot some yesterday…it was harder than I thought to be there shooting.  This morning I ran a 5k. So now hopefully I am ready for the run ‘n’ gun in Pecos this weekend!

Gary –

What training do you have coming up?

Rob- Made airline reservations to Phoenix.  Wrote to California Governor Jerry Brown and asked him to veto the anti-gun bills on his desk.  I also was hit in the face with a stick a few seconds after I took off my safety glasses.  Be careful.

I am going to insert a live promo about upcoming training classes here.

Seg 2- News

-Michael Bloomberg’s anti-gun advocacy group Everytown for America held a small rally in Washington D.C. last week.  They gathered in front of the Capitol Building.  The few demonstrators said they wanted to shame Congress into passing more firearms prohibition.  Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe spoke at the event and brought his armed bodyguards with him.   Never letting  the truth get in the way of a useful lie, McAuliffe’s claimed that people “can be armed” where he was standing on the Capitol grounds in Washington D.C.  That is a lie.  First, it is nearly impossible for law abiding civilians to be legally armed in Washington D.C. Second, it is illegal for civilians to be armed at the Capitol.

Virginia Governor McAuliffe also said that booths at Virginia gun shows openly advertise with signs that say “no background checks.”  McAuliffe also implied that background checks are non-existent in Virginia.  The man lies boldly, if not well.  Firearms purchases in Virginia require two forms of identification AND lengthy ATF paperwork including a background check with the FBI.  Someone must  have paid the Governor to advertise the myth of the gun show loophole.

McAuliffe isn’t alone in his hypocrisy.  Shannon Watts, founder of Bloomberg’s Moms Demand Action holds an extremely rare carry permit issued by the City and County of San Francisco.  She is also rumored to have asked for deputization from the US Marshals Service.  That would give her nationwide carry privileges.  That request was denied by the US Department of Justice.

-We have some moms on our side too.  Dana Loesch starred in an NRA video saying SHE is an armed mom.  The video, besides being well produced public relations advertising, also reminds us that women are the fastest growing segment of gun owners, and the media is desperate to ignore their story.  Why would journalists ignore that women are one of the fastest growing segments of the concealed carry community.  Listen to the video now.

(insert MP3 clip of advertisement audio from Dropbox)

John – it hit a nerve with Shannon Watts.

Women and minorities are gun culture 2.0.. and the best kept secret of 2015.

Rob- Chicago’s highest concentration of permits is in the 60617 ZIP code.  That is on the city’s southeast side with a population made up of 55 percent blacks and 34 percent Hispanics.  That is further evidence that women and minorities are providing their own security.

Rachel- I hear they finally put in an outdoor gun range in Northern Illinois.

Gary-  I have to look into that.  What is it called?

Rachel- it is open all night long, 24 – 7.. and it is called Chicago.

Gary- You’re picking on my city.

Rachel- Too bad you can’t all be from Texas.

-Speaking of Texas, The New York City police department had its first active shooter seminar for the media.  It was a surprise to the journalists that they have joined clergy, school children, school teachers, and mall crawlers on the list of mass shooting targets.  To raise their concern further, mass murderers and terrorists are increasingly sophisticated in their planning and their media strategy.  For some murderers, providing publicity before, during and after the attack is just as important as pulling the trigger.  The murderers study the success and failure of other murderers.

A brochure from the active shooter seminar suggested that office workers “Attempt to quickly overpower the individual with force in the most violent manner possible.”  Their options are limited since they are merely disarmed civilians working in “gun-free” New York City.

One journalists asked if the police considered the Good Guy With a Gun scenario when developing their active shooter protocols. Deputy Police Commissioner John Miller replied with a flat no. Quote- “It’s not like Texas where two terrorists can show up to an art show with two AK-47s and multiple magazines and still be outgunned. I love that about Texas.”  Close quote.

Rachel- I told ya that Y’all can’t be Texas.

John- I read the story.  The reporter let their anti-self-defense bias show.  I like the question that Mark Walter’s asks.  “If you were in a violent murder scene, would you want to be disarmed or have a gun?”  The honest journalists say they want a gun.  The dishonest ones say they want to be disarmed.

-All of us can’t be Texas, but we can come very close.  A small town in southern Oklahoma has a thoughtful school superintendent.  Wilson Public Schools identified five employees to take training so they can carry concealed on campus.  First, they take three phases of instruction totalling 63 hours.

Instruction began with unarmed security procedures, rules and regulations.  In short, how to fill out reports.  Each of the volunteers provide their own firearms while the school district pays for their training.

High School Principal Gary Labeth said, “A school shooting situation, even in a small town like Wilson, is over by the time the police department arrives.  A tactical team would take 15 minutes coming out of Ardmore.  Arming staff is just another level of protection.”

School Superintendent Smith said,  “Should the unthinkable happen, smaller schools without resource officers are left to fend for themselves as first responders speed toward the scene. Putting concealed weapons in administrators’ possession allows us to provide a more effective line of resistance until help arrives.  I hope we never have to use it.  I hope it’s a deterrent. That being said, when those kids are here, they are ours and I will do anything to protect them.”

Rachel- It sounds like those children are in good hands.  I’m surprised they mentioned the concealed carriers by name.

Gary- Yeah, I would have left them anonymous.

-Marines and sailors were attacked in Chattanooga this July.  The Pentagon recently decided against arming military recruiters.  Instead of guns, recruiters were told to hide behind “desk partitions.”   Remember that the last islamic terrorist killed four Marines and a sailor.  The terrorist had hundreds of rounds of ammo and could have killed dozens more service members or civilians.  The terrorist only stopped when police and a Navy commander who was carrying his unauthorized sidearm at the time, finally fired back and killed him.

Quoting Marine Corps Commanding General Mark Brilakis, “Recruiters showing up armed is not going to make either educators or parents comfortable.”  The Pentagon will instead protect recruiters from future ambushes by training them to take cover or evacuate in the event of an attack.”

Rob- Really?  Think about it.  If your son or daughter were going to join the military, would you be comfortable knowing that the military leadership of this country did not think your child’s life was worth defending?  If they won’t defend your child here at home, how can you trust them to protect your child overseas?

John – What happened to every Marine a rifleman?

-A recall campaign against Oregon state Senator Floyd Prozanski survived one election-law complaint.  The recall was launched after the Eugene Democrat sponsored a bill requiring

repeated background checks for casual firearms exchanges.  The complaint against the recall was funded by Michael Bloomberg.  The Oregon secretary of state ruled that the recall campaign didn’t violate election law to acquire any of the signatures turned in last week.  The secretary of state is currently checking the 10 thousand signatures submitted by the recall campaign.  The effort needs 84 hundred valid signatures from voters in Prozanski’s district.  The decision will be in next week.  The recall effort against House Majority Leader Val Hoyle was stopped after Hoyle resigned from office.

Rob -Mexican Diplomat Alejandro Estivill sent a letter to US Democrat Representative Elijah Cummings of Maryland.  Estivill said the Government of Mexico’s deeply appreciates the recent gun control efforts by the Democrat Party. The diplomat also urged a stronger push for gun control.

As if on queue, Democrat Senator Tim Kaine from Virginia proposed legislation to make “gun sellers” criminally liable for the misuse of guns they sell.  The bill expands the seller’s obligations and exposes gun sellers to criminal civil penalties if the buyer doesn’t meet federal purchase criteria.  Currently, the law protects dealers from criminal prosecution unless the dealer “knew or had cause to believe the customer had a criminal record, history of mental institutionalization or other disqualifying factor.”

John- This legislation makes the seller responsible for the state’s mistakes.  I look at the buyer’s carry permit.  I look at his ID.  I run a NICS check, and I’m liable if the government made a mistake.  This is a plaintiff’s lawyer dream come true. It also seems to contradict the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act

Also from Virginia, Democrat Patrick Hope was joined by most of the Democrat Representatives from Virginia as he held a press conference.   They called for universal background checks to stop the gun show loophole.  Within minutes Representative Hope said “I chose background checks, not because it would have prevented the shooting but because this would be easiest to pass.  We will not be able to prevent every single incident.  If we can prevent one incident from occurring, then we should do it.”

Rachel- Let me translate that for you.  I’m going to make a non-violent gun owner into a criminal.. because I can.

John – Hope is what I call a blood dancer. He was calling for UBC before the blood had even

Cuomo Calls For National Gun Control – And Threatens More State Laws
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo wasted no time in calling for national gun control after an ex-aide was shot and critically injured at a late night street party. Carey Gabay, 43, is hospitalized in a medically induced coma. Gabay was just one of the many victims of NYC’s violent Labor Day weekend.

According to Cuomo, New York’s tough firearms laws are ineffective if they stand alone. No mention was made of where the nation’s so-called lax gun laws have played a part in significantly reducing murders and assaults. Cuomo seeks to hide the failure of his draconian laws with even more gun laws. He stated that anyone who doesn’t believe federal gun control laws are needed is “delusional.” And Hiz Honor certainly knows delusional first hand.

Cuomo indicated that he will follow the failures of his misnamed SAFE Act with even more anti-gun legislation. The governor has started discussions with leaders of the New York State Legislature about new gun control measures, He plans to propose a package of gun legislation in his State of the State address on Jan. 9. No specific goals have been listed, but modern sporting weapons have always been in his sights. Looks like those who choose civil disobedience when not registering their rifles may have made the right call.

Rachel- OKay let me translate that for you: what we did didn’t work….so let’s do more of it!

-We’re seeing the presidential campaigns start their opposition research.  American’s For Tax Reform came out with a bit of old news.  They remind us how First Lady Clinton testified in 1993.  She called for a 25 percent tax on all gun sales.  The Clinton library has a document with a list of terms to be forced on firearms manufacturers.  Clinton wanted a court appointed monitor to review all firearms advertising.  Also, no one under the age of 18 would be allowed in a store that sold firearms.   That entry is dated 1999.  Last month while campaigning in Iowa, she said “We’ve got to do something about gun violence in America, and I will take it on.”

Rachel- Gary, tell me again about pro-gun Democrats?

Gary- We have them in Illinois, but not in Arkansas and New York.

John – One of the architect of those terms was Andrew Cuomo whom we just mentioned.

John- That is scary.  If American gun owners sit on the sidelines this election, then they don’t deserve their guns. They didn’t care enough to get involved with politics.

Rob- Just because you are are not interested in politics.. does not mean politicians like Comrade Clinton are not interested in you.

-Our next act in the ongoing drama of gun security theater is being played out in Boston.  Expect to be hearing from the mayor and police commissioner soon if  you’re a legal gun owner.  Boston Mayor Marty Walsh and Police Commissioner William Evans announced they’re sending a letter to every licensed gun owner in the city.  The letter gives gun owners information on how to report a private gun sale, and how to report loss or theft of a firearm. It also advertises a free gun lock and advice on gun storage.  Last, but not least, the city offers a $200 gift card if a firearm owner turns in their guns.

Gary- That really is security theater for the media.  You and I know where criminals get their guns.  A mayor and chief of police should know as well.  We’ve read the crime research so we know that thugs get their guns from their family and friends.  This is letter to gun owners is propaganda for the media.. and it’s enabled by an ignorant news media that doesn’t do their research.  They simply read the press releases handed out by anti-rights politicians.  Shame on them.

Rob- Reading a press release without asking skeptical questions is bad journalism.  We don’t do that and we’re amateurs.

-It isn’t enough that the NSA wants to monitor our calls.  It isn’t enough that the US Department of Justice wants a list of firearms owners.  New recommendations from the South Carolina Domestic Violence Task Force call on schools to teach children about approved relationships as early as kindergarten.  The new class materials teach children to tell school officials about any incidents at home.  From the August 31, 2015 report:  quote “The Task Force supports these efforts to educate all students on domestic violence, dating violence, healthy relationships, and other related issues. Education for young people is important to help end the cycle of violence and prevent abuse and deaths among teens.”  If found guilty of violating healthy home living standards, parents would lose their gun rights. Restoration of gun rights would be awarded only after the FBI removes the subject from a national database.

Rob- The most dangerous home situation for a child is in a home with unwed parents where one of the partners is not the biological parent of the child.  That is exactly the situation that government fosters.. and now they want children to report what they think they heard at home.  When you’re actively promoting the problem then I don’t believe you’re serious about finding a solution.  Besides, wIth all its yelling and screaming, how many bogus reports will child protective services receive after parents have friends over to watch a football game.

Rachel- They want school children to turn in parents.. but let Planned Parenthood ignore if an adult is having sex with an underage girl.  I guess parents are out of political favor.

John – It sounds like the Young Pioneers or the Stasi.

FSU Sued for Violating Florida Gun Law Preemption

Apparently fearing the armed criminals and maniacs who are not on their football team, the Florida State University President and Chief of Police are prohibiting firearms in private vehicles on school property. Florida Carry joined FSU graduate student Bekah Hargrove of Florida Students for Concealed Carry in suing FSU for violating the state’s preemption law. The law specifically mandates that only the state legislature can regulate arms in Florida.

The Florida First District Court of Appeals ruled in Florida Carry v. UNF, that Universities have no authority to regulate the lawful possession of firearms that are properly stored in private vehicles on campus. Despite this clear precedent, FSU chose to illegally prohibit the possession of firearms in private vehicles. It has a chilling effect on the right to bear arms when law abiding gun owners are lied to by public officials, especially ones who control their own police forces, according to the Executive Director of Florida Carry. We demand that public officials follow the law and will stand for nothing less.

We can only wish FSU’s President and Chief of Police would join the new Thug U’s Defensive Line in jail for their blatant violations of Florida law.

BREAKING NEWS! Florida State University football fans are now allowed to bring their guns to Doak Campbell Stadium as long as they have a concealed weapons permit and they keep the firearms locked in their cars, the school announced Wednesday — one day after being sued for banning guns on campus. Whatdayahknow; The intelligentsia can learn. Congratulations Florida Carry!

– Our last news item comes from our colleague Liston Matthews, where he reports a similar problem for gun owners in Knoxville.   The Tennessee Valley Fair notified the public that the fair is a gun-free zone.  Quote “no weapons of any kind are permitted at Chilhowee Park.  All entrants are subject to search.”  Chilhowee Park is owned by the City of Knoxville.  The state of Tennessee and the state Attorney General recently reminded cities that they are prohibited by law from regulating the possession of firearms.  It sounds like Tennessee needs a law like Florida’s that holds local politicians personally liable for violating the civil rights of gun owners.

Gun Quote– The only defense against evil, violent people is good people who are more skilled at violence. Rory Miller

Segment 3 Interviews

Doctor Bruce Eimer

Rob- We’ve heard politicians and anti-rights activists cry out for gun control after the murder of two TV journalists in Virginia. At the same time the gun grabbers admit that their proposals would be largely ineffective in stopping public murders.  That doesn’t make sense.  We called Doctor Bruce Eimer to tell us what is going on.

Welcome to the show, Doctor Eimer.

Doctor Eimer is a licensed psychologist.  He is board certified and practices in clinical, pain and forensic psychology.   He has decades of experience in a broad range of settings, from clinics, hospitals, universities, and private practice.  But there is more.

BE- I also teach and write about armed self-defense.

1- Doctor Eimer, what makes this particular shooting of two broadcasters from Roanoke, Virginia so powerful?

Youtube from camera man- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OP2PZ9DlA_g

Youtube from murderer point of view- https://www.youtube.com/verify_controversy?next_url=/watch%3Fv%3DQAPlmeGSeRY&spfreload=10

BE- We have video.  We saw it happen.  We heard the people shout and scream.  Viewing a murder in real time on TV is shocking.  Like seeing the planes hit the WTC towers on 9/11/01.

-This is up close and personal. Two nice people. America’s middles class next door neighbors, the young adults we went to grade school with are murdered right in front of us and we are helpless to do anything!  We have very strong feelings seeing them murdered.

-We all have a part of us that feels guilty that they died and we are still alive. This is termed “survivor guilt”.

-This is what makes us all want to do something. What that something is depends on what side of the gun rights/gun control fence we stand.

Rob- Politicians proposed the trendy gun grab of “universal background checks”.  In the next breath these proponents admit that background checks don’t stop murderers.  Why does that make us feel better? What is attractive about gun prohibition?

BE- “Gun control laws” do NOT make everyone feel better. The motives of the legislators and lobbyists for gun control are often divergent from the motivations of the general public who support more gun laws.

-For the legislators, motives range from power, money, and control all the way to hoplophobia.

-For the public, the uneducated public and even the educated public like the idea of “common sense” gun laws. If you use denial to deny logically thinking through the issues and consequences of more gun laws as well as the existence of the ones currently enforced by the BATF, then you can continue to believe it makes a difference in terms of deterring violent crime.

Then you have the segment of the population who know better. However, they have a stick up their you know what as a result of some unresolved inner conflict, traumatic personal experience, secondary benefits from professing we need more gun control, identification with someone who believed in gun control, a fixed belief, and even the possibility of self-blame, self punishment and general punitiveness and hostility.

This leads into the territory of true hoplophobes.

Rob- Why are we attracted to a plan that doesn’t work?  Why does gun control work for the politician even though it doesn’t work in the real world?

-Gun control is NOT placebo which is a “sugar pill” that one believes is the real medicine. It is a “Nocebo”.  It is a belief that is fueled or motivated by the irrational belief that if we DO NOT have it, Mad Max will come to our society. It also has lot to do with how one was raised and who one identifies with.

-And it is NOT superstition. But it is or should I say, can be, magical thinking. In other words, make more laws, and the problem will go away. Then it is no longer our problem since we did everything we could.

Rob – As part of your professional practice, you do psychological evaluations of security officer candidates, police academy candidates, and new police hires. Is there any common thread present in those that you recommend should not be hired?

Rob- How should advocates for self-defense respond?  What should we say and do to fight this magical thinking?

-We cannot afford to sit on our hands, or bite our tongues.  We must fight more oppressive legislation with more grass roots education.  This does require community outreach, and most folks, myself included, do not have time for this.  And that is what the “Chuck” Schumers and Bloombergs of the world count on.   But as long as we turn the other way, or do nothing, good old Chuckie and Mikey will steal your face, steal your guns, steal your rights, and steal your life.

Rob- Doctor Eimer, where can our listeners follow you?

“ARMED: The Essential Guide to Concealed Carry”

-Interview with Anette Wachter, the 30 Cal Gal.

Camp Perry-

Did you concealed carry?  Every state but Illinois.

Any concerns with transporting your rifles and scopes and staying in a hotel?  Take the expensive parts indoors at night.

Personalities we wish we’d met with you?  The South Africans threw everyone into the pool after the meet.

Career development- What did you learn at the meet?  The winning British Team won on skill, not equipment.  The were a force of nature.  Also, coaches deserve a lot of credit for a team’s performance.

Tease our listeners and tell them why they should compete.  The US junior team took first and second place at Camp Perry.

I shoot at the Lady-3-gun nationals in October.

@30calgal on twitter.

Stephanie asked that we call her at 406-350-2088 and not on Skype.

-Stephanie Spika

John – Stephanie Spika is running for the NRA Board of Directors as a petition candidate. She is a native Montanan who worked for many years with the NRA Institute for Legislative Affairs. She was the NRA ILA’s Social Media Manager before she left to take a similar position as the Social Media Manager for Benelli USA.

Stephanie, welcome to The Polite Society Podcast

John – Could you tell us why you are running for the NRA Board?

John – Looking back on past elections, I don’t remember a candidate under the age of 30. You are now 29 if I read correctly. What do you think your relative youthfulness would bring to the Board?

John – Do you think your age would be an impediment to either being elected or to your effectiveness on the board?

John – You worked for the NRA-ILA for a number of years. I remember meeting you in the Media Room at a number of NRA Annual Meetings. Do you think your prior work for the NRA will help you as a Board member?

John – Finally, what do you hope to accomplish if you are elected to the Board?

Rachel- What are 2-3 practical steps you’d want the NRA to take to become more attractive and helpful for women?

You said you’d like to see more involvement by women and youth in the NRA. What would that look like?

John – Remind our listeners who can sign your petition and then hopefully to vote for you.

Please tell our listeners where they can find out more about your and your campaign.

Segment 4 DGUs

Gary- Four to One Odds Overcome by the Use of a Handgun

A 34 year old Gresham, Oregon man found himself in a fight for his life as four armed men invaded his home late Saturday night. More than a dozen officers responded to reports of multiple gunshots, but found the fight was all over, except for the bleeding. One criminal was hospitalized for gunshots, one for stab wounds, one was booked for assault and burglary, and the final invader is cooling his heels at the morgue. The busy homeowner was hospitalized for stab wounds and later released.

Detectives leading the ongoing investigation believe the suspects specifically targeted the victim. What is known is that a single armed man was able to successfully defended his life against terrible odds by the use of a firearm. This is just one example of why magazine capacity limits are dangerous to the law-abiding who are increasingly facing multiple attackers. Something the politicians protected by submachine-gun totting professionals should note.

Rob- capacity 2.3 attackers.

Gary –

Connecticut Family Man Fights Off Two Armed Attackers

Two Massachusetts criminals had their plans interrupted by an alert – and armed – Hartford, Connecticut homeowner. He might have saved his wife and child from an especially evil fate, as the thugs packed zip-ties along with their guns.

Two men pointed a gun at the resident as he returned home around 11 at night. The pistol permit holder pulled his handgun and shot both attackers multiple times. He was slightly injured in the exchange of gunfire. His assailants are in the hospital in critical but stable condition. His wife and child were thankfully unharmed.

Police have not charged the victim; however, the investigation is continuing. Neighbors in the quiet community were very supportive of the homeowner, saying that he did what he had to do to defend his family. Several hoped they would be able to do the same if in a similar situation. The staff of the Polite Society applaud the homeowner’s foresight and courage in the defense of his family.

Son Kills Armed Masked, Violent Man – His Father

Startled awake by screams for help, a Florida son found a man dressed in tactical gear holding a gun to his mother’s head. The man then pointed his gun at Malachi Heisler, forcing the youth to use the rifle he had grabbed. The invader fell dead from a gunshot wound to the head.

It turned out that the attacker was the mother’s estranged lover… and Malachi’s father. He violated a restraining order granted after a prior attack and assaulted Jolene Andrews once again. Investigators said the felon had a history of drug and alcohol abuse and was likely drunk when he broke several windows and forced his way into the house. According to police; “He was there meaning business and playing for keeps.” The sheriff’s office said no charges will be filed against the teen. “When you open the door and you see somebody dressed in all black, in fatigues, with a ski mask on and a gun in your mother’s face — he did the right thing”, according to the county sheriff. The fact that the madman was armed with two BB guns does nothing to change that fact.

Dayton Homeowner Shoots a Home-Invader Twice – Two Years Apart
Some guys just can’t take a hint.

DeBrandon Jurrod Dickerson, 22, of Detroit was found dead on a Dayton street, shot by a 43-year-old female homeowner. Dickerson’s end started early in the morning, when he  broke into a house via a second story window. The searching invader found a woman hiding in a bathroom, an armed woman, who shot him in the chest at close range. Dickerson escaped out the same window and ran a block before dying.

To this point, this is just another justifiable case of self defense; necessary far too often. It becomes additionally disturbing as the owner’s home had been robbed 5 times in 11 years, the last just a month before. Examining Dickerson’s criminal record, this sad event takes a decidedly stranger turn. It now appears that Dickerson had crossed paths with the homeowner before; almost 2 years to the hour. Then, two men broke down the back door of the same house, and the homeowner had to use a firearm to defend herself. Dickerson and an accomplice were arrested, one with a wound to the arm. Apparently, the pointed lesson of a gunshot, and whatever limited punishment for this and all his other offenses, simply didn’t work. He returned, literally, to his old ways, but had to pay for it with his life.

If Dickerson wouldn’t, the law-abiding should take advantage of this lesson. Once again, the legal system failed in its goal of reform or even to just keep the criminal away from the public. We must be prepared to defend our lives at all times, often from people that should have been behind bars.

Listener e-mail discussion

John writes

Hello all,

I wanted to write in after listening to the recent interview with Matt Martin from Geeks, Gadgets, and Guns… Not to detract from the potential of the Apple watch to be used as a shot timer, but a wristwatch shot timer with an accelerometer already exists. It’s called the Shotmaxx. I have one and I can report that it works as advertised. If your listeners are interested, I recently posted a brief review of the shot timer to my blog at www.civiliangunfighter.wordpress.com. My coauthor and I blog there about a variety of topics that we hope are of interest to gun owners and the armed citizen.

Anyway, keep up the good work, I really like listening to the podcast every week on my commute to and from work.

Take care,

Hey Paul and the gang,

I heard Gary asking again about a way to use a revolver for dryfire training and thought this would be of interest. http://www.leocombat.com/product/wall-saver-safety-cylinder/

Orleans, VT

Rachel: Rob, do you have any new posts from your SlowFacts blog you want to mention?

Rob- I wrote an article about the virtue of armed self-defense.  We don’t hear that word virtue used much these days.  A right is an activity that the government must allow and protect.  A virtue is something we want to promote.  We are in a culture war.. and most of our politicians are pacifists, so what should we do.  The article is called GUERRILLA TACTICS IN THE CULTURE WAR, #1: Promoting Self-Defense as a Virtue.  It is up at Clash Daily.  Ammoland and at my blog slow facts dot wordpress dot com.  I’d appreciate your comments.

John – Nothing important from me this week.

Seg 1- Personal news from each participant (when you are done with your segment please ask the next person what has been up with them)

Rob- Last Sunday I spoke on Armed American Radio with Mark Walters.  Tuesday morning I spoke on Lock and Load Radio with Bill Frady. We talked about the Kate Steinle murder in San Francisco.

I wrote and read the news for Kenn Blanchard on his Black man with a gun podcast.

Intro to guns for a neighbor.  Studied Louisiana firearms laws and started giving away my reference books on California gun law.

John – This week was taken up mostly with work. Nothing gun related except for blogging. Even though I had free time, I didn’t even practice dry firing. I’m a slug, what can I say. However, next weekend, I am going to demo day held by SilencerCo. It is part of their Quiet Riot Tour and we’ll get a chance to shoot a number of weapons including submachine guns and SBRs that have been suppressed.

I would also like to note with some sadness that one of my favorite podcasts has ridden off into the sunset. Of course I’m talking about the Gun Dudes. They have decided after 340 episodes to call it quits. I wish them the best.

Rachel- This week my shooting community was stunned by the sudden tragic passing of Michael Adam, also known as Scout. Michael was a long-time Appleseed Master Instructor and also the co-founder of Battle Road. He’s been a guest here on the podcast, talking about our history and heritage. He was one of the best people I’ve known, and he heavily influenced all his shooting students, not just in the world of shooting, but also in the way he saw them as people and gave them hope and light and encouragement that reached to the very depths of their souls.

I can’t even begin to describe the breadth and depth of his impact on those he came into contact with, both those from Texas and all over the US. I can only try to sum up briefly some of what he mean to me personally.

Michael Adam taught me to shoot; to be an instructor; to value, respect, and care for those around me; to work harder and go farther than I thought I ever could; to never stop learning.

He warmly welcomed everyone I brought out to Davilla for Appleseed and Battle Road courses with a rare kind of hospitality and care. He brought together a team I was honored to be a part of. He always had stories to share, always crazy ideas for another great Zombie Run obstacle that he’d try to get Mark to agree to smile emoticon, and always a heart bigger than I remembered the last time.

His sudden passing leaves an immense hole in many lives, and my life will not be the same without Scout around. But his life left a lasting impact on everyone around him, and my life is not the same because he was a part of it. For that, I am grateful.

Paul: New to me truck that I have for a few weeks. I am driving a Volvo, and it has enough room I can actually dry fire in the truck.

I am going to insert a live promo about upcoming training classes here.

(Ed levine is waiting on skype!)

Seg 2- News

John reads

Service Member Shootings in Chattanooga
The staff of the Polite Society Podcast would like to express our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the five Service members killed at the Navy Operations Support Center in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Godspeed Gunnery Sgt. Thomas J. Sullivan, Staff Sgt. David A. Wyatt, Sgt. Carson A. Holmquist, Lance Cpl. Squire K. Wells and Petty Officer 2nd Class Randall Smith. Rest in Peace. Well done.

Our thoughts and prayers are also with the two men wounded in the attack. Another attack in this unacknowledged but escalating war on the United States.

Governor Asa Hutchinson quickly acted to allow Arkansas’ Service personnel a chance to fight back by authorizing Arkansas National Guard Adjutant General Mark Berry to arm full-time military personnel. Arkansas National Guard bases will no longer be gun-free zones. Hutchinson acted in the memory of Arkansas’ native son; Sgt. Wyatt, who was killed in the terror attack. Then, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott announced he’s authorizing Texas National Guard Adjutant Gen. John Nichols to arm troops at facilities across the state in response to the deadly shooting rampage in Tennessee. Now, Gov. Mary Fallin has authorized the state’s adjutant general to arm full-time Oklahoma National Guardsmen at military facilities in Oklahoma.  Where our military men and women remain disarmed by executive order, armed Americans have been spontaneously showing up to protect those who protect us.

It seems that common sense is staging a comeback in these troubling times.

John – I just read this morning that Indiana Gov. Mike Pence has authorized the Indiana National Guard and their recruiting stations to have armed personnel.

Will obama make recruiting centers gun free zones?

A New Class of Prohibited Persons

The LA Times reported on Saturday morning that the Obama Administration will be proposing that Social Security recipients – retirees and those that are on disability – who need help managing their money will now be included in the FBI’s NICS check system as prohibited persons.

Given that there is no reliable way to identify those recipients who have mental conditions, Alzheimers, dementia, disabilities due to brain injuries, etc., the Social Security Administration is proposing to use the VA standard. This standard is that anyone who has trouble managing their own financial affairs and needs a fiduciary is a prohibited person and is reported to the FBI for inclusion into the NICS database.  These people would be included in the category “mentally defective.”

Mental health professionals, advocates for the disabled, and people who support gun rights say this is not right. “Someone can be incapable of managing their funds but not be dangerous, violent or unsafe,” said Dr. Marc Rosen, a Yale psychiatrist who has studied how veterans with mental health problems manage their money. “They are very different determinations.”

Comment – John – I am furious over this. My mom died after suffering Alzheimers for years and now my mother in law is suffering from it. This proposal robs them and others of what shred of dignity they have left. As for stopping so-called “gun violence”, when was the last time you heard Grandma involved in a mass murder.

Comment- Rachel – I often encounter people who think measures like these are a great step forward. I can often change their minds simply by asking the question: who gets to decide who’s not allowed to have a gun, and what gives them that right?

Last week, Maine Governor Paul LePage signed constitutional carry into law.  Maine is the eighth state that does not require a permit to carry concealed weapon.  Constitutional carry applies to all non-prohibited persons over 21 years of age, or over 18 and in the military.  Quoting one maine legislator, “You can open carry in Maine now. All this does is allow open carry gun owners to put on a jacket.”

Gary-  We have two pieces of good news to report from Oregon. First, the Oregon Supreme court said that law enforcement could not routinely ask if a citizen had a firearm on their person without probable cause.  In this case, the citizen was stopped for J-walking.  Concealed carriers in Oregon do not have a duty to inform a police officer when they are stopped.

The second news story is that the anti-gun Democrat House Majority Leader Val Hoyle will no longer face a recall.  Pro-rights groups collected enough signatures to force Hoyle into a recall election, but the recall stopped when Hoyle announced she was leaving office.  Well done Oregon gun owners.   [We did this last week]

-Mayor Stephen Reed was indicted.  The Mayor of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania was charged with hundreds of counts covering some 17 separate charges of of theft, bribery and fraud.  Why would we cover the prosecution of a democrat mayor of Harrisburg, pennsylvania.  Mayor Reed is a proud member of Bloomberg’s Mayors against illegal guns.. also known as illegal mayors against guns.

Reed used the former Harrisburg funding Authority as a political ATM and withdrew hundreds of thousands of dollars charged to “administrative fees.”

The Mayor bribed members of Harrisburg City Council to pass questionable city bonds.

The Mayor is also charged with taking funds from the city Parking Authority, the Civic Baseball Club and the city School District.

With a record like that, Mayor Reed could run for office in Chicago or Trenton.. once he gets out of prison.

So far the decision as to whether Catholic churches in Chicago will open their doors to licensed concealed carry holders is left up to each church.  The Catholic Conference of Illinois says it is studying the matter.  Last week Chicago Archbishop Blase Cupich said he supports banning licensed concealed carry holder from entering his churches.

Quote “I know that in many dioceses there are policies that firearms are not permitted in churches, and I think that’s that’s only reasonable.. I surely would be supportive of not having any firearms in our churches.”  close quote.

From what I read, a Catholic church in Chicago will open its doors to a criminal illegal alien, but turn away a licensed concealed carry holder.  Hmm.

Comment – MDA of NJ is starting a Twitter campaign to get Pope Francis to endorse their campaign for “gunsense”.

Rob- Church liability?

-I wonder if Chicago Archbishop Cupich reads reports from John Lott’s Crime Prevention Research Center.  Last week Dr. Lott summarized recent trends in concealed carry, and here is the news we can use.

-You know that concealed carry is growing in popularity.  Since President Obama was elected, the number of concealed handgun permits has grown from just under 5 million to almost 13 million today.

-Not only that, but the rate of growth is increasing each year.  Last year the number of permits grew by a record 15% , and this is while more states adopt constitutional carry and don’t require permits.

-The murder rate fell by 25 percent during that same period showing that our guns don’t cause crime.

-Today, the national average is that one out of 19 adults has a permit to carry.

-In five states the licensed carry rate is more common than one in ten adults.

-In ten states, a permit is no longer required to carry almost everywhere.

-The face of concealed carry is changing.  Since 2007, permits for women have increased by 270% while permits have only grown by 156% for men.

Evidence suggests that permit holding by minorities is increasing more than twice as fast as for whites.

That is good news.

– As you would expect, the number of federal background checks set a new record in June.

Rob- Segment 4 DGUs

Could you defend yourself as you sit in your car?

Our first story starts late at night in Nashville Tennessee.  A 74 man had just gotten into his car when two teens robbed him.  They took his cell phone and demanded he get out of his car.  The elderly man climbed from his car.. and drew his concealed carry pistol.  He shot one of the robbers but missed the second.  The second robber ran.  The elderly man held the wounded thief for police.  Police are looking for the thief who took the man’s cell phone, but police already determined the shooting was in self-defense.

Do you think you’re ready for a gunfight?

Four men pulled up to a convenience store.  The getaway driver stayed in the car while the other three put on masks, drew their guns and stormed into a Super K convenience store in Houston, Texas.  The thieves grabbed a customer and used her as a human shield.  The thieves demanded money from the clerk behind the counter.  Then they beat the clerk when he did not comply fast enough.  Another stove employee heard the robbery and walked into the store from the back room.  He drew his handgun and shot two of the three thieves.  All three fled to their waiting get-away car.  The two wounded criminals later died in a local hospital.  Police are still looking for one of the robbers.  The clerk required stitches to the back of his head.

The store owner said most of the employees are armed because the store had already been robbed within the previous month.  Are you ready to take on three armed men?  This store owner didn’t have a choice.

Red Molly
A Tallahassee couple’s waking nightmare was a man outside their bedroom door screaming I’m gonna kill you! I’m gonna kill you! She grabbed a phone; he grabbed a gun. The gun got to the scene a lifetime quicker than the cops. The wide-eyed, frothing invader was only five feet from the homeowner when he fired. Struck in the chest, Jarod Clemons, 27, staggered out the smashed front door and back into the night, where he died.

Mr Clemons had had a busy night. It started with a hit of a new street drug Molly, a synthetic variant of Ecstasy cut with unknown substances. It involved jumping from his girlfriend’s moving car, seeking help in a police station, breaking out of an ambulance on the way to a hospital, terrorizing a neighborhood, and finally throwing a planter through the front door of the house where he met his end.

In the past year, ERs have seen a sharp increase in patients taking Molly. “Somebody who comes in on Molly is actively psychotic. They’re usually very combative.” said an ER  physician. Our listeners should be aware of the growing threat of the many, new synthetic street drugs. The people they encounter may be impervious to pain, stronger, faster, more aggressive and far less rational than the ordinary criminal. This situation has reminded one cop of the bad old days of Angel Dust, only worse.

Man Stops a Firearm Robbery With Open Carry Weapon

“I was at the counter buying bullets with my cousin and I heard some loud bangs. I look up and they are just loading up weapons from the counter and then they run off and my instincts kicked in.” Joey Tapley followed the three robbers outside the store, pulled his open carry weapon and stopped one of the thieves. “I told him drop the gun man, mine is loaded, just drop the gun. We made eye contact for a second or two and he dropped two guns and ran,” Police later arrested the three teenagers and an unidentified woman.

Tapley carries a gun openly and says his effort wouldn’t have been possible without Governor Brownback’s approval of the open-carry law that took effect on July 1.

While we applaud the results of Tapley’s actions, we must point out that he took an awful lot upon himself. As no lives were being threatened, many self-defense instructors would advise the armed citizen not to get involved in these situation. The risks are huge. Things could have gone south very quickly, as they did in the following DGU:
John- Customer Follows/ Shoots Robber
An early morning trip to a New Orleans gas station turned  into a fight for survival for an armed citizen attempting to stop a robbery suspect. The thief got the stations cash as well as the man’s wallet. The victim went to his car, retrieved a firearm, and confronted the escaping robber.  Shots were exchanged and the thief collapsed after running a few steps. The criminal is in critical condition and will be booked on two counts of armed robbery, possession of stolen property and possession of illegal narcotics if he survives.

Again in this instance, the armed citizen acted when there was no active threat to himself or others. He put his life, his future, his family and his finances all on the line. Many jurisdictions would not look kindly upon these actions. The man luckily survived the shootout. It’s unknown if he will have similar luck with the legal system.

For all of us that carry a firearm in public, it’s up to us to educate ourselves and decide in advance what we would do if we were confronted by a similar situation.

Vietnam Vet Shoots Robber
Sometimes, you just have to do what you have to do. A Vietnam Vet found himself in the proverbial box one afternoon. His trip to a Sycamore, Georgia gas station was altered with the words; “Put the money in the bag!” Don Rogers looked up and saw a man pointing a pistol at the clerk.

With another’s life and his own in obvious danger, Rogers acted. He pulled his CCW. “When I did, he looked over at me and turned my way and I fired a shot. And he grabbed his side and then I fired two more shots before he got out the door,” Rogers said.

A shaken Rogers related; “Well, I was hoping nothing like this would ever happen, but I was glad I had my weapon with me… I just did what I had to do.” The store clerk says Don Rogers may have saved his life. Turner County Sheriff Andy Hester observed; “These people that’ll go out and do this kind of stuff need to realize – it ain’t always gonna fare to their favor, just because they’re a predator.”

The predator and his female accomplice called 911 from three miles away. She’s in jail as an accessory to armed robbery, he’s in a Macon hospital in critical condition. A gas station clerk and Don Rogers are alive and well — he just did what he had to do.

A Robber’s Here, Daddy

Out of the mouths of babes… A three year old toddler startled his father with the words “A robber’s here, daddy.” Seconds later, the Eldorado, Ohio homeowner faced a masked, obscenity-shouting gunman. Forced to protect the five members of his family, the man shot once, hitting the intruder in the chest. Police found the robber unconscious in the home’s front hallway. He died at nearby hospital. The parents say they did not know the 22-year-old criminal.

Stay armed, stay alert, and stay safe out there – it’s an increasingly dangerous world.

Rob, do you have any new posts from your SlowFacts blog you want to mention?

I wrote about Taxing Washington State Politicians.  The Seattle City Council wanted to tax law abiding gun owners because of the harm criminals do with guns.  I proposed a new tax on all politicians because of the harm some politicians have done.

John do you want to mention anything off of No Lawyers – Only Guns and Money blog you would like to talk about?

Everytown Moms for Illegal Mayors has started a campaign to get Cabela’s to not release firearms purchases after the three day period if the NICS check comes back as “delay/hold”. As I said in my blog post, has anyone from that organization ever bought a firearm at Cabela’s? I have and they have the most comprehensive process for gun sales I’ve ever seen. It is computerized, it involves double checking entries, and it involves managers. Moreover, according to the FBI itself, a person is assumed to be eligible to purchase a firearm unless they find a disqualifying factor. A delay or hold means the FBI wants to check a little deeper but they haven’t found a reason to deny the person. Under Federal law, after three days, the dealer is allowed to transfer the firearm. It is not an “incomplete check” as stated by the gun prohibitionists.
