Seg 1- Personal news from each participant (when you are done with your segment please ask the next person what has been up with them)

Rob- I’m glad to be back with you.  I got to shoot at the Glock Range Day in Naples Florida.  Thank you to Glock, and to the Louland gun club for supporting the event.  I decided to shoot with my inside the waistband holster and from concealment.  I sent a letter to my congressman in support of bill H.R. 3799, the bill that makes mufflers legal.  I mailed in the last payment for my Louisiana concealed carry application.  Now I wait.

John – Between teaching and work including a benefits fair, I didn’t get to do much with guns this week. However, I should have much more time in the Spring as I won’t be teaching. The powers-that-be have decided I don’t have the right academic credentials to teach anything other than freshman level courses. This despite teaching a senior level course for 10 years, 18 years of real world experience, and my CFP.  It’s a case of credentials being considered more important than knowledge. While I’ll be losing my gun buying money, at least I’ll have time now to use the guns I have!

Like Rob, I’ve used PopVox to send a letter to my Congressman regarding HR 3799.

Rachel- Yesterday I directed logistics for an event called Wilderness Fun Day. This is an educational event that evolved from my core group of friends getting together informally to run medical scenarios. It’s now a well-organized community-wide event. We opened it up to 40 attendees this year. They were divided into 6 teams, and the teams rotated through training stations along a wilderness trail. The stations included Gear Hacks, Knot-tying, Fire-building, Splinting/Bandaging, CPR, and a few others. Each station also had a scenario to practice what the attendees just learned. I love running logistics and I love outdoor days, so this is one of my favorite events.

Gary – What training do you have coming up?

Paul – Conversation with Jason Christiansen. -Concealment Solutions – segmented show

I am going to insert a live promo about upcoming training classes here.

Seg 2- News

Pennsylvania restrictions

Elections have consequences.. even in Pennsylvania.  State Senator Art Haywood submitted a new bill to the state judiciary committee.  The bill requires residents to have a license in order to possess, use, manufacture, control, sell or transfer a firearm. In order to qualify for a license, an individual would need to be 18 or older, be a resident of Pennsylvania, take a class and pay a fee.  New Jersey gun control comes to Pennsylvania.. because gun owners didn’t vote..

John – Elections do have consequences. Right now Michael Bloomberg and other gun control groups are pouring millions of dollars into 3 Virginia state senate races to switch that body into a Democrat controlled, gun control approving body.

Rob- The bill should not pass in Pennsylvania, but it should get Senator Haywood some Bloomberg cash.

The Real Australian Model

Obama and Hillary have been pushing the so-called Australian Model of gun control, which is in reality a draconian gun ban and confiscation scheme. If they were honest (admittedly, a mighty big if), they might look to see how the Australian Model is actually working Down Under.  The Age, of Melborne, Australia reports that things are anything but peaceful. To quote; “Melbourne is awash with guns”

Senior police officials are warning of an arms race getting out of control. “There hasn’t been this much weaponry on the streets since the days of the underworld war,” the police source said. Their rivals are armed, so criminals are increasingly carrying guns. Glocks and SIGs are easily available via illegal trafficking networks. Smugglers are bringing in guns from overseas, principly from the Philippines. “This is really getting out of control.”

The black market rate for a new, unregistered semi-automatic handgun is between $8000 – $10,000. That trade is largely controlled by outlaw motorcycle gangs. Penalties are stiff, but only two offenders have been charged with trafficking guns since 2010. Only eight were charged with possessing a traffickable quantity, according to data from the Australian Crime Statistics Agency. Between 2011 and 2014, 477 offenders were charged with carrying an unregistered weapon, but only 23 per cent received a prison sentence. Australian civilians are also feeling the bite of the armed criminals; with increasing numbers of drive-by shootings, robberies and home invasions.

It all sounds distressingly familiar. So do the politician’s very predictable calls for more laws to combat the criminals that are ignoring the existing laws. It seems like the Australian style gun-control is as ineffective as the American version, and Obama and Hillary should know that. But then again, gun control has never been about guns – it’s about control.

John- At the same time the gov’t is trying to keep the average citizen from having a 19th century designed shotgun – a lever action shotgun. They are calling it a rapid fire weapon.

CNN’s Sally Kohn Caught in an Anti-gun Lie

This hasn’t been a good week for the mainstream media: CNBC’s Republican debate moderators embarrassed themselves as blatant Progressive shills, and incompetent ones at that. The liberal media was exposed and damned by the candidates, audience and new media. Then, CNN’s commentator Sally Kohn also embarrassed the media with bald-faced lies.

Kohn’s hard-left politics are well known. She is most infamous for her libel of American conservatives, alleging they were worse than Islamic extremists. That indefensible claim came directly after the Charlie Hebdo terrorist attacks in France that killed 12. Kohn’s so-called analysis inexcusably ignores the 9/11 attacks that killed 3000 people. She also ranted several times about Christians and Jews for various non-issues.

This week she reported that 10,000 children are killed with a gun each year in the US. She used that figure to demand “common sense” regulation of firearms in the same fashion as cars and children’s toys.

The 10,000 children killed figure is shocking – and shockingly false. FBI crime statistics list only 1085 child murders by any means in 2014. And many of those death come from teens engaged in criminal activities themselves, like the drug wars that plague our cities. This gross exaggeration caused Kohn to issue a retraction and correction. CNN belatedly footnoted the column with this Editor’s note: “An earlier version of this opinion essay misstated the number of children killed every year by guns. 10,000 children are killed or injured by guns every year…” Even that corrected number looks highly questionable, especially when considering the source, the highly politicized American Academy of Pediatrics. CNN has said nothing else about their commentator’s excesses, nor their lack of even basic fact checking. Bad show, CNN. Bad show.

It must be said that even though this was a bad week for the legacy media, they’ve been bad for the truth for decades.

Rob- It must be an easy job to write for CNN when you simply get to make stuff up.  The CDC reported 505 accidental deaths per year from firearms.

Rachel- only way to combat erroneous data is through scholarly studies

Rob- 70 percent of counties won’t have a single murder each year.

Religious Freedom v. Gun Laws

A conflict between gun-control laws and religious freedoms is being played out in a federal court in Pennsylvania. An Amish man has filed suit because he wants to buy a gun without using a photo ID. The Amish faith does not allow the man to be photographed as this would create a graven image. Since federal gun-control laws demand a photo ID without exception when purchasing a gun, the man could not exercise his 2nd Amendment rights without violating his religious beliefs. A firearm is needed, as many Amish hunt to put food on the family table.

For decades the Amish have been fighting for religious exemptions, winning a landmark case in 1972, where the Supreme Court held that they could exempt themselves from compulsory education laws on religious grounds. However, courts have usually found that the benefits to the state of photographic identification trump religious principles. This case brings several legal theories into conflict, including the actual effectiveness of IDs that are handed out to citizens and illegal residents alike. If the Amish win in this case, gun-control laws would become a little less restrictive and most importantly, of lesser importance than citizen’s rights like the freedom of religion.

This is a very basic case of rights versus control, and it will be very interesting to watch. We must indulge our inner cynic in wondering if this case would have gone easier if the man had been a Muslim…

John – I remember Paloma at GRPC saying that the ATF turned down an Amish man in NY who offered to use fingerprints.

Rob – Can he wear a burka so his face is completely covered?

Brazil follows the example of Illinois and goes shall issue

The nation of Brazil is considering shall issue policies for handguns.   A bill stripping away current limits on gun ownership has already been approved in committee and is due to go to the lower house of Brazil’s Congress in November.

Under the proposed law, anyone over 21 could buy a gun.  This includes people accused of crimes or and people convicted of less than serious crimes.  They could purchase up to nine firearms a year and 50 rounds of ammunition a month.

State employees and public figures would be allowed to carry firearms at work.  This includes  government inspectors and politicians.  So would private citizens who work in public, such as taxi drivers.

At present, weapons can only be bought legally by people after obtaining a license.  Licenses are issued on a case-by-case basis.  Brazil currently has one of the highest murder rates on the planet.  Robberies and the gunfights between drug gangs shoot some 40,000 people each year.

Gary- 50 rounds month isn’t enough for training.

Rob- Are they trolling for Bloomberg dollars?  That would be awesome!

Do as I say, not as I do in Chicago

Speaking of gun free zones- President Obama went to Chicago last week and held the city up as a model to stop gun violence.  The city has some of the strictest gun control laws found anywhere.  There are no gun stores or firing ranges in the city, or the county it controls.  Chicago also leads the nation with over 2500 people shot so far this year.

President Obama again promoted background checks and a ban on certain style of firearms when he spoke at a meeting of police chief’s in Chicago.  Obama didn’t mention that criminals don’t buy guns at gun stores.  The president remained silent about the refusal of federal prosecutors to charge criminals convicted of violent crimes with a gun.  In several cases, repeat criminals convicted of gun crimes served less time than citizens who inadvertently violated a firearms law.

Police chiefs are appointed by elected mayors and city councils.  They applauded the president.

Moms against gun free zones.

Frequent listeners know that most mass public murders occur in gun free zones.  The wife of an Indiana congressman noted that all the mass murders in the last six years were in gun free zones.  Christy Stuntzman  is a teacher and a mom and says some colleges are not safe for her children to attend.  Many colleges are so called gun free zones, and these colleges don’t protect students and staff, but endanger them instead.  She started the facebook group Moms against gun free zones. https://www.facebook.com/momsagainstgunfreezones/

Rob- I notice the growing cultural split in our country.  We have liberal politicians promoting gun free zones.

John – I should note that her husband Marlin is probably going to run for the US Senate in 2016.

Rachel- it’s about marketing

Rob- Rachel, you go to schools and churches.  Are they gun-free zones?

Idaho School buys rifles and trains faculty in the use of firearms.

One school district in Idaho is joining a number of schools that are bucking the gun free zone trend. Garden Valley school district, outside of Boise has purchased 4 rifles and has had the local law enforcement training teachers in their use. In an interview with Boston’s WBUR

The district superintendent was asked if there is an element of danger in arming teachers. his reply was  “Teachers have the option to be a part of the training and be a part of the trained staff, and we have a detective who has come in to help us with all of our training and has done a great job with getting the teachers and administrators on board understanding the seriousness of what the weapons can do. It’s a respect value. We’re taking teachers that know and respect weapons to help with securing the facilities. It’s not saying, ‘hey I’m going to take a teacher that doesn’t want to be a part of it or doesn’t feel like they could make those decisions in those moments,’ but the local county sheriff’s department participates in the training so there’s a collaboration between us so we can at least get things situated and under control before they get there.”

Rachel-my goal: not for everyone to carry a gun, but for everyone to have the opportunity – the information necessary to make a rational decision and the training necessary to feel confident to defend himself.

We can’t escape from danger. We only try to create the least dangerous situation that we can.

If you want a gun in Austria, you can’t have it.

Austria is an anomaly among the European Union in that Austrian citizens may own several kinds of weapons.  Break-action shotguns and airguns are unregulated.  Semi-automatic handguns, rifles, shotguns and pump action shotguns are available with a permit.  At least they were.  They aren’t now, because the Austrians bought them all.  They emptied the shelves of guns and ammo.  The influx of violent muslim immigrants into Austria caused a run on self-defense firearms.

In Britain where self-defense firearms are illegal, the surge in islamist violence has caused a run on cricket bats.

Rachel- Now I know what to send my european friends for Christmas.  They want ammunition!

Paul- 9mm is always in season.

Rob- You can own a bow in Austria, but hunting with a bow is prohibited.  I don’t know what the Austrian police think about broadhead points on arrows.

Too much money in politics? – Last story (insert any other stories before this)

Paul was perusing the internet this week and came across an interesting infographic relating to political spending. You often hear that there is too much money in politics and it certainly can seem that way just before election day however according to the Institute for Justice we spend more each year  on Halloween than we do for all federal elections in a presidential election cycle, and that only happens every 4 years.

Developing Situation in Colorado Springs  (This one should go last because of its immediacy)
We have breaking news from Colorado Springs: Three people are dead, along with the perpetrator who left a trail of crime until stopped by good people with guns. Information is very preliminary, but the spree apparently started with a house fire set by the deceased criminal. A bicyclist was murdered a few blocks away. Witnesses said the man was firing an AR-15 as he continued down the street, killing two more apparently random victims. Police caught up to the madman outside a fast food restaurant, where they fired perhaps 20 shots to stop the rampage.

Our thought and prayers are with the victims, family and friends.  Unfortunately, we’ve had to start our stopwatches to see how long it take Obama and Hillary to politicize this tragedy. We remind all that last week a woman used her car to kill four people at an Oklahoma State homecoming parade. Like the car, the firearm was a mere object: like the driver, it’s the madman who was at fault.

Gun Quotes-  This week’s quote is from Colonel Jeff Cooper.  “If you round up all the guns, you’ll still have a criminal problem. If you round up all the criminals, I promise you, you won’t have a gun problem.”  Hang on everybody, we’ll be back with our interviews.

Podcaster’s Father Critically Injured in a Home Invasion

We’re saddened to report that Terrell Prudé, father of the creator of the excellent Liberal’s Gun Corner podcast, has been critically injured in a home invasion. The 83-year-old was attacked by four men, who broke his neck and left him for dead. He lies paralyzed in a hospital and is not expected to live much longer.

Prude has lived an accomplished life as a professional pianist. He has guested on his son’s podcast and shared several tremendous stories of defending his life and family with firearms, squaring off against racists and robbers. This time, with his limited mobility, he was unable to reach his firearms to once again save his life. His son is bravely using his father’s tragedy to emphasize the need to stay armed at all times. A gun out of reach is of absolutely no use in a sudden, deadly situation.

Our thoughts and prayers are with C. Terrell Prude, Sr. We wish his son, C. Terrell Prude, Jr., podcasting as Cowboy-T, the peace and strength he will need in this heartbreaking time.

Stay armed and stay observant, these are dangerous times.

Chicagoland Robbery Thwarted by CCL.

There must be three, four or more layers of unpossibilities in this story: a felon who somehow actually had a gun, who was unaware of the many gun laws  he was breaking, inexplicably committing an armed robbery, and being unprecedentedly stopped by a CCL holder, all in the gun-controlled paradise of Chicago. The mind just boggles. [Okay, Turning Sarcasm Down from 11]

A Saturday night stickup turned deadly for the armed robber of a Southwest Side convenience store. The criminal pulled a handgun and began threatening the store’s employees. When he moved to take a female employee into the back – usually a very bad development – one of Chicagoland’s few CCL holders drew his legal possessed weapon and opened fire. The thief was fatally injured.

Both store employees and the CCL holder were unharmed. The legal carrier’s decisive action reversed a situation that has proven fatal to many store workers and customers in the past.

Florida Man Time
A Jacksonville, Florida pizza delivery man successfully defended his life when assaulted by two armed robbers. When the criminals demanded money, the delivery man used his own firearm to wound one. There being no honor among thieves, his buddy left him lying in the street.  The wounded man has been hospitalized in critical condition.

There is no information if the driver will face criminal charges himself or if he will be disciplined by Domino’s Pizza for carrying a firearm on the job – and living because of it.

Rob- Would you like Lead with that order?

Rachel- Question for Gary: if you were training a student who was a pizza delivery man and wanted to carry on the job, would you recommend any additional or different training than normal?

Rob- Gary, you said know the law.  That is different than knowing company regulations.

Three Enter – One Exits

A late night armed robbery resulted in two deaths — the robber’s. Three masked men entered Latino’s Meat Market armed with at least one pistol and a stun gun. Sometime during the robbery, two employees fired several shots from their own guns, striking two of the three masked men. The third suspect was able to run out of the store with an undetermined amount of cash. One thief died at the scene, the second at the hospital. The third remains at large.

No employees or customers were seriously injured in the incident. One employee did have a cut on his nose, but did not require immediate medical treatment. Reading, Pennsylvania police say it appears as though this will be a case of self-defense and the shootings will be justified. However, the investigation is ongoing and the final decision will be made public at a later date.

Woman Attacks Former Boyfriend

There’s more than a little truth to the ol’ saying about a woman scorned. Lakisha Knight, 35, carried a handgun when she broke into the home of her former boyfriend. In a struggle with the male resident, Knight was shot and killed. The 63-year-old man suffered minor injuries. An 11-year old boy also in the house was uninjured.

“The shooting remains under investigation. Once the investigation is completed, the results of the investigation will be provided to the Commonwealth’s Attorney for a decision on whether or not criminal charges are warranted,” the Virginia State police spokeswoman said.

John – This is also a warning to all men about dating much younger women.

Man Defends His Life and His Case of Beer

“Oh, [bleep], he has a gun, too!” That was a Florida Man realizing he could be getting something a lot hotter from the man than his case of beer. Walking up from behind his intended victim, convicted felon Wilmar Jolteus, 32, pointed a gun at Tyrell Owens’ head and ordered him to “Give it up.” Police praised Owens for immediately moving (we’d call it Bustin’ Off the X) and seeking cover behind a wall. The hood fired at least two rounds as Owens drew his concealed handgun and returned fire. The felon was hit in the left leg and right butt-tock and fled, stumbling and falling his way to a waiting Mercedes SUV. His confederate dumped the wounded thug outside an emergency room. There, police arrested the criminal, adding one more to his string of eleven South Florida arrests.

Jolteus was charged with first-degree attempted murder with a firearm and attempted robbery with a weapon. Owen will not be charged. The police report praised Owen for his coolness under fire and his tactical sense. It stated that Owens’ death was prevented only by his superior tactical positioning and return fire. However, the victim is scared for his safety in case the suspect or his friends returned to the area for revenge.

On the means streets of Orlando, Mr. Owens will need to keep his wits about him — as well as the pistol he already used to save his life.

Indianapolis Restaurant Offers Discount For CCW Carriers

After Art Bouvier’s restaurant was robbed, he didn’t do the common thing and resort to Gun-Free Zone signs. Rather, he reasoned that the best thing he could do to protect his employees was invite more guns in – guns carried by law-abiding, licensed concealed carriers. So, diners at Papa Roux will receive a 25% discount, as long as they are dining with a CCW.

“I don’t want Papa Roux to turn into the O.K. Corral,” Bouvier said, “but I don’t want to be an easy target.” Bouvier announced the discount offer on his Facebook page shortly after learning of the robbery. “If thugs are going to come in and threaten OUR extended family with guns, you’d better believe I will use every trick I know to protect (our family),” he wrote.

We commend Bouvier for his hard sense in effectively making his establishment the safest one in the area. Any thief with a lick of common sense will now be patronizing the other eateries protected by Gun-Free Zone signs and unicorn wishes. 2nd Amendment supporters are now filling the tables of Papa Roux to show their support. In addition, noted gun blogger (and hardcase) Tamara Keel frequents the area; ne’er do wells should take note – for their own protection.

Rob- The restaurant is in Indianapolis, but might do carryout.

Listener e-mail discussion

Paul: Rob, do you have any new posts from your SlowFacts blog you want to mention?

I condemned the editor at the Washington Post after he called for a “gun free society”.  A gun free society is where the weak fear the strong, and the few fear the many.  We would all depend on the state for our protection.  The police would be first responders rather than second responders.  That vulnerability and fear isn’t a fault for the anti-gun bigots.  That fear is a cherished feature.  Fear will unify our dependence on the state.. and our obedience.

Rob- Clash Daily.  Ammoland.  Slowfacts. That is at slow facts dot wordpress dot com.  John, tell us what’s new at your blog no lawyers only guns and money

I did a post responding to criticism of the Hearing Protection Act by Ladd Everitt of the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence. It was called, “That’s Why It’s Called Capitalism, Ladd”. He said that the only reason that the NRA and suppressor manufacturers were pushing the act was, get this, because they “were potential profit areas.” Excuse me but I thought a business was supposed to make a profit. Ladd also tried to say that removing suppressors from the NFA would have “obvious consequences for safety”. On that I agree with him but not in the way he means. It would mean that hearing is protected which to me is a good thing.

That and more is at only guns and money dot blogspot dot com.

Paul – I want to bring up a post John wrote just today about Ted Koppel’s book.

We would like to thank Charlie Foxtrot for writing up show notes for us. Even though you don’t hear him on the air he is certainly part of what you do hear. Look at his blog at not one more gun law dot blogspot dot com

Rob: be aware,

John: and we’ll see you down the road.
