Seg 2- News
Rob -New Jersey, heads up! The Association of New Jersey Rifle and Pistol Clubs told us that the State Assembly is considering a bill reducing firearms capacity to 10 rounds. There is no grandfathering or amnesty period in Assembly bill A2006. This legislation outlaws many tube fed 22 caliber rifles by Browning, Marlin, Mossberg, Remington and Winchester. Remember, magazines in New Jersey are fixed. First the state required that magazines can’t be removed.. and then outlawed the part they required be fixed to the gun. Violation of the law is a felony with a three year minimum sentence.
John- From our colleague David Codrea, the California Department of Justice added a so called “smart gun” to the handgun roster. Of course, the smart gun doesn’t meet the required microstamping requirements. Cal DOJ said the gun was admitted before the microstamping requirements went into effect. No schedule was released.
Paul- Also from David, a knife wielding gang killed 27 people in a China train station. 109 were injured. Eventually the police arrived and shot some of the attackers. Once again, disarming innocent citizens does not protect them.
John- It proves that Chinese politicians care as much about the safety of their citizens as New York politicians.
Rob -So much for background checks. A total of 9 new rifles were stolen from the gun safe at a Memphis area Wallmart. Most of our listeners are aware that criminals use stolen guns for crime and don’t bother with registering their firearms.
Paul- Criminals know background checks won’t stop them. If only politicians were as smart as criminals.
John -One of the first prosecutions under New York’s SAFE act was brought to court, tried.. and dismissed. Police officers stopped Paul Wojdan when Wojdan was a passenger in a car the police pulled over for speeding. His registered and permitted firearm was in the glove compartment. He had more rounds in the magazine than are permitted by New York law. Lockport City Judge William Watson dismissed the misdemeanor charges since the the magazine was searched without a warrant. Now, Wojdan wants all six of his firearms back since the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office confiscated all of the guns listed on his pistol permit.
Rob: California Attorney General Kamila Harris requested an en banc review and reversal of Peruta V San Diego. She is shocked that the common people want to protect themselves. Why, law enforcement has to grant licenses to mere commoners, gasp. Harris used to be the District Attorney of San Francisco.
Paul- Also in California, Sheriff Adam Christianson of Stanislaus County, California wrote a defense of concealed carry licenses for the local newspaper. The court’s recent rulings have no effect since Sheriff Christianson already issued permits on a shall issue basis with licenses increasing by another ten percent last year. The police budget is being cut and the Sheriff hopes that criminals think twice now that citizens are armed. The biggest problem the sheriff faces with license holders is that some drive while intoxicated. Quoting the Sheriff, “I’ve heard plenty of rhetoric about abuse, vigilantism and other predictions of doom and gloom related to the issuance of concealed carry permits. To date, we’ve not had a single incident or occurrence where that has happened.”
John: Sounds like the sheriff is smarter than the attorney general.
John- A Michigan state senator has introduced legislation simplifying the process to receive a concealed carry license. Sen. Mike Green introduced Senate Bill 789 which would decrease the renewal fee from $105 to $90 and use the Michigan State Police to run background checks.
John: Comment on Canadian RCMP changing their regulations. On Feb 27th at 10 pm, the RCMP reclassified the Swiss Arms PE90 – the Canadian equivalent of the SIG 551 – from being either unrestricted or restricted to prohibited. 10 years earlier that had said the firearm was OK to own. The approximately 1,800 Canadians who bought one over the last 10 years have to turn them in and will not be compensated. They have suggested gun owners ask their dealers for refunds.
Rob- In Illinois, the first 5 thousand concealed carry licenses were scheduled to be printed and mailed yesterday. These licenses are for the initial applicants who helped check out the statewide applications system. Most of them are firearms instructors. We should be getting pictures from our friends in Illinois by mid-week.
Paul- That reminds me that Illinois Gun Lobby Day (IGOLD) is coming up next Wednesday, march 5th. The website is I G O L D . I S R A .org of do a websearch on IGOLD.
John- Comment on the gun owners law seminar. Blackman talked about 3D printing of guns. Plans and drawings are protected speech under the first amendment.
Rob- Domestic violence victims in Kentucky could apply for an expedited permit to carry a concealed gun under a bill passed by the Kentucky House. House Bill 351 would allow the state to quickly issue concealed-carry permits for 45 days to people who have received court protective orders in abuse cases. The Senate Judiciary Committee approved a similar bill, SB 106, on Thursday. That is some good news for people in trouble.
Paul- Gun Quotes-
“Guard with jealous attention the public liberty. Suspect every one who approaches that jewel.” —Patrick Henry
Hang on everybody, we’ll be right back with listener comments after this
Mike Vanderboegh strongly worded letter-
Paul: We had a comment on the website:
I took Robs side on Mike Vanderbough releasing names of the politicians voting for CT’s latest anti gun legislation. I completely understand where you were coming from with not releasing addresss’s.
That was until you validated your opinion. That’s when I felt stabbed in the back. You said “they did nothing wrong” until they do i.e. gun confiscation, the names and address shouldn’t be released.
That means you don’t believe that anti 2A bill CT just passed is wrong. They totally infringed our 2A rights. They already did wrong, you just pulled a Guns & ammo Metcalf moment.
That’s really bad, real bad.
Rob: We disagree. Did you read Mike’s letters? You trust Connecticut gun owners with an AR, but not an address? I’m sorry, but I don’t get it.
Mike posted the names and addresses of Connecticut legislators who outlawed the AR15 and standard capacity mags. You say that Mike Vanderboegh is inciting violence by posting the names and addresses of Connecticut politicians. I think he is helping to reduce the likelihood of violence. You say he is creating a problem. I say the Connecticut politicians created the problem and Mike is trying to minimize the result.
This is how we got here. The Connecticut politicians outlawed the most common rifle in America. In legal terms, it is a firearm in common use”. Existing rifles must be registered. Most gun owners declined. These same politicians then told CT gun owners to turn in their firearms or face arrest and prosecution.
I paraphrase Mike for brevity, but this is what he asked honest gun owners to do- “First, we must — we have a moral duty to — use every peaceful way to avoid violence right up to the moment they open fire on innocent civilians.”
Mike asked Connecticut politicians to stop their war on gun owners before it turns bloody. “I am BEGGING you.. to use your power to suspend the enforcement of the new gun laws until they are ruled constitutional or not by the United States Supreme Court.”
We’ve seen police use unnecessary no-knock warrants. We report on them several times a month. We’ve seen honest citizens get killed in those no-knock entries. The blood of honest citizens is not the correct solution for a political problem, a problem the Connecticut politicians created for themselves.
I am afraid the political status quo will lead to bloodshed and I think the Connecticut politicians are to blame. Mike asked moral gun owners to hold politicians accountable for the problem the politicians created. Mike said, “People victimized by their own state authorities in an unconstitutional law.. will blame the people who sent the killers to their door.”
Honest gun owners are not a risk to public safety so there is no pressing need for police action. None. The only risk is to some politician’s reputation. THAT is precisely the problem, and some of the politicians want to mask their political failure with innocent blood. That is despicable. A police state oppressing honest citizens is not a good political solution.
Politicians work for us. They are public figures. They need to be seen and known to the public they serve. That is how the American system works. It promotes violence when government officials live in secret and are insulated from the people they serve. History has taught us that. Mike asked Connecticut citizens to walk up to the front door of these politicians and ask them to overturn their oppressive gun laws. Welcome to democracy, face to face. That is exactly what Rachel is advocating in the Texas caucuses.
If you don’t want to meet and talk to the citizens then don’t become a politician.
Speaking for myself, I don’t want the police to come between the people and the politicians. A violent police state is profoundly dangerous. We’ve seen the police step out of the way before. It is called the blue flu.
It is time for the state police to step back and stop being pawns.
We have a three segment interview coming up with John McGregor. John is an active law enforcement officer as well as being an instructor at the Sig Sauer Academy in New Hampshire.

Segment 4 DGUs
John- DGU-A homeowner in Pine County Minnesota heard someone unexpectedly open the door to his his home at two in the morning. The homeowner grabbed his handgun and confronted the intruder standing in his living room. The homeowner held the intruder at gunpoint and called police. When the police were arriving, the intruder reached for his waistband. The homeowner fired and the intruder fled. Police followed tracks in the snow and located a man hiding in a snow bank behind a tree. The man was treated for hypothermia then booked into the Pine County Jail. A vehicle, connected to the suspect, was found nearby.
Paul- DGU- This is sad news. A young robber died and three young people face murder charges. Two young men attempted a robbery armed with a 20 gauge shotgun. Two accomplices waited in a get away car. They demanded drugs and money from a homeowner in Hubert, North Carolina. The homeowner secured and fired his 22 caliber pistol wounding the gunman. The four fled, but crashed their car into another vehicle while en route to the hospital. The 21 year gunman was taken to Camp Lejeune Naval Hospital for treatment, but was later pronounced dead.
Rob- DGU- A pizza delivery driver shot and wounded two robbers Thursday night in northwest Harris County, Texas. Two men armed with guns and wearing bandanas over their faces entered the Domino’s Pizza Parlor and demanded money. The delivery driver was in the store at the time, and had 25 years experience as a Harris County Deputy Sheriff. He drew his duty weapon and fired, injuring the two gunmen. The gunmen were transported to Taub Medical Center in critical condition. Neither the deputy nor other Domino’s employees were injured. A Vice President at Domino’s pizza said they have a no weapons policy, but this a very unusual situation since their delivery driver was also an officer of the law.
Paul- We have the links to each of our news and defensive gun use articles at Polite Society Podcast.com if you want to share them with a friend.

Email from Shawn in Ohio:
Enjoyed the show. I am a resident of Ohio and a graduate of TDI’s F.A.S.T.E.R. Program sponsored by Buckeye Firearms Ass. It was great to hear your interview with Jim Ervin.
Email from Ian:
Hi Paul, your initial reaction was not too surprising at the guy who wanted the English lady’s introduction removed. Your justification and emotional response was a pleasure to hear.
The reason I thank you?
I’m English, and I am also partner in a firearms training company called FAST OC down here in California… where I have had the pleasure of teaching quite a few Americans how to shoot. With my English accent.
I am also very community orientated and grow sick of the small minded idiocy of a percentage of gun owners that simply do not understand what they are saying… and how bigoted they are. It gets really weird when they are contradicting the fact that we are talking about, as you rightly pointed out, a human right. So few people seem to want to push back and explain that, and so the ignorance perpetuates itself.
Wouldn’t it be a bit weird if only American Citizens could keep and bear arms? It would make American citizens a protected class, missing the whole damn point of the 2nd Amendment!
As for Piers Morgan… I know the UK doesn’t want him back. There are two types of people back in the homeland. Those who despise Piers Morgan, and those who REALLY despise Piers Morgan.
Anyway, thanks again for making your position clear and thanks for the podcast. It’s one of the finest.

John: Rob, do you have any new posts from your SlowFacts blog you want to mention?
Rob: I have two of them. One of them covers the expected backlog of carry licenses. We expect 60 thousand applications in my county alone.
I wrote another post called Crazy Gun Laws for Us, but Not for Them. Over and over we’re told gun regulations are essential to save lives, yet each time these public safety laws are written, public safety officers are the first to receive exemptions. You can tell an abusive law when the politicians exempt themselves and other government employees. That post was picked up at Clash Daily and Ammoland. Both are on my blog.
John, do you have any blog posts that you want to talk about? I wrote about the Canadian RCMP re-regulation at http://onlygunsandmoney.blogspot.com/2014/02/interesting-controversy-going-on-in.html
